Influence Plans for Wicklow via MAD Mountain Biking Club

DUBLIN, IRELAND (Team Geared Up) If you participate in outdoor activities (or if you don’t for a particular reason!!) you can now have your say and possibly influence plans for the future development of the hills around Wicklow. Via MAD Mountain Biking Club, spend a few minutes filling out the survey (took me less than ten) which asks general questions about how you use the outdoors and what could be done to improve your usage.

This survey is a really important stage in the preparation of an Outdoor Recreation Strategy for Co. Wicklow, as it means that the plans will be based on the activities, needs and ideas of the people who enjoy the wide range of recreation opportunities available in the county.

A public workshop to discuss the strategy will be held in the Glendalough Hotel at 8pm on Wednesday 7th May 2008. Sounds like an opportunity to have your say!

Irish Climbing: Reader Poll - Stakes in Dalkey Quarry

LONDON, UK (Team Geared Up) - An interesting post appeared on climbing.ie during the week, and a suitable debate has followed. The author is ‘Arther Aggs’, specifically not ‘Arthur’, any idea who this is? Is it an anagram? maybe, so from now on I’m going to call him ‘Garter Gash‘.

Hi all, just to let you know, and give you warning that you will see me over the winter digging holes at the top of most of the main popular climbs around the quarry. I am going to be putting in some metal stakes for belays. All stakes will be tested for suitability and once finished will be clearly marked and identified as to the details to contact for further information. I hope this will open up climbing without the continued strangulation and suspect dependancy of little yellow bushes.

Garter Gash has proven he’s not a fly by night staker! and come back with some great answers to his critics including the statement:

Consultation will be taken with the MCI, all passing trade in the quarry and the council.

Ireland: A deliciously dark sense of humour.

LONDON, UK (Team Geared Up) - Lunchtime, and RTE News are reporting that Ireland has been voted as the “#1 friendliest country” in the latest ‘Lonely Planet’ Bluelist book through a survey of backpackers & travellers. Ireland comes in at the top above Fiji, Indonesia and Malawi as the friendliest travel destination.

People were said to have ‘a deliciously dark sense of humour’. The Emerald Isle has ‘a welcoming attitude towards strangers’ and the Irish can find craic in boom or bust eras, Lonely Planet said.

…with ‘The Troubles’ ended, ‘a cautious optimism reigns supreme, infecting the land once again with the sense that anything’s possible‘.

The Lonely Planet were bought by BBC Worldwide earlier this month.

Good news for Ireland anyway.
