“He jumped from 40,000ft without a parachute…” Know the lyrics? Travis Pastrana does! This Moto Cross rider (world famous for performing backflips on a motorbike) has jumped out of a plane wearing only his boxers and holding a can of Red Bull. No Parachute!

In the promotional stunt, after getting the required film footage his dive crew ’soared’ over to him and attached his hidden harness to a chute in free-fall and pulled the cord. Nice! How much could have gone wrong with this one?! Story via Goblog I think.

Video of MAX Adventure (Fiennes cancelled trip due to funding) and the landrovers they were using that had modified wheel bases to take tracks on them. Very cool vehicles for Ice work.

1997 - Wales, Alaska. Reconnaissance of the Bering Strait to establish the feasibility of driving across the sea-ice from Russia to Alaska. This was part of a bigger project to drive around the world from the west of Ireland to the east of Newfoundland, to celebrate Land Rover’s 50th anniversary. Led by the renowned explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes, the project was cancelled due to costs.

LONDON, UK (Team Geared Up) - GO Blog points to a 63yr old Frenchman plans to head-first freefall from the edge of space in dizzying bid to break Mach 1 but he must wear a special suit to ensure his body fluids don’t boil. He will leap head-first from a weather balloon 25 miles above Earth and plummet at more than 1,000mph (He needs to break 330 meters per second to break the sound barrier!). He will face external temperatures of minus 100c while inside his carbon-fibre suit it will be a stifling 65c due to the atmosphere.

As he goes up in a weather balloon he hopes to break three more world records - for the longest sky dive, the highest parachute jump and the highest altitude achieved by a human in a balloon. The record for highest leap was set in 1960 by a U.S. Air Force test pilot, at just under 20 miles.

After leaping from the balloon, Fournier believes he will break the 760mph sound barrier within 37 seconds.

The lack of friction due to the thinness of the air will mean he can attain a much higher terminal velocity, and his team of scientists estimate he will reach the top speed of 1,113mph before he is slowed down by greater air resistance.

To give you an idea of just how high this is, his parachute will not open until 6 minutes & 25 seconds after jumping!

This is one of the crazier records I’ve heard yet!
