DUBLIN, IRELAND (Team Geared Up) Eimear was on to let us know that Alan Ryan (her husband?) had just broken the Irish Ironman distance record in a time of 9 hours 17 minutes and 12 seconds in the Quelle Challenge in Roth Germany. Congrats to him!! That’s kinda incomprehensible to us mere mortals really……

Alan’s race report appears in full over on Triathlon Ireland:

I knew my swim did not go well. It hasn’t been good of late and consequently I did not expect to catch Trevor Woods or Mark Riseley (the other two Irish who started in my wave on the bike). I know Mark won’t mind me saying this, but when I came upon him going up the Solarer Berg on the second lap, it gave me a great boost. And then to pass Trevor a little later – well I knew for me anyway - the race was now on. The lads are both very strong runners and I knew I had very little chance of holding them off in the marathon. Still, I decided to put the hammer down in an effort to get a few minutes head start on the run –you never know.

Just to scare you completely Alan’s splits read like this: 1 hour 5 for the swim, 5 hour bike and 3 hour 6 minute marathon. And the story also appears in today’s Evening Herald. If you ever manage to get your hands on a copy of the Stone Mad DVD then you’ll realise the effort put in by Fergus and Alan Ryan on their journey to their first ironman in Austria in 2005. This was a documentary showing their training and build up to it. It’s brilliant viewing, you’re guaranteed to watch it and enter for one………at least that’s what happened me………… ;-)

DUBLIN, IRELAND (Team Geared Up) I always find these stories hilarious. There’s something amusing about someone attempting to cheat in a marathon, like, do we not do it for ourselves? Anyway this story is even funnier because the cheat in question was a Mexican presidential candidate in 2006 (third in that contest) but crossed the line in the Berlin Marathon in a time of 2:41. That would have given Roberto Madrazo first place in his age category of over 55.
One look at the finish line photo would tell you this person hadn’t run the course, he’s got a jacket on for God’s sake!

Madrazo broke a week of silence Wednesday, issuing a statement in which he said the allegations of him cheating were nothing more than political attacks meant to discredit his sporting career and his as-yet-unlaunched foundation, Marathon: A Foundation for Competition.
“I never declared myself the winner in Berlin with the time distributed by the media nor did I receive any medal for the alleged first place,” Madrazo said

This Qoute is from WTOP News. (If he wasn’t claiming to have done the course why would he be pumping his fists in the air for his finish line photo?!)

Apparently his chip time had him running faster than Felix Limo’s world record for 15km of 41 minutes 29 seconds between kilometres 20 and 35! That would be some running for Haile, never mind a 55 year old recreational runner!

Photo from Wtop News: AP Photo/Victor Sailer (who’s credited in some news stories with reporting Roberto as looking suspiciously overdressed as he crossed the line!)

WOW Do you reckon it’ll be long before we’re seeing a sub 2 hour marathon??

There’s also an article there about Paula’s second placing in last Sunday’s Great North Run and who are the favourites for this Sunday’s Chicago Marathon? I’ve ran Chicago and loved it, it’s one of those big city marathons you just have to do once!
