Adventure Racing: Portugal XPD Race

Written by aislingc

DUBLIN, IRELAND (Team geared Up) Best of luck to the Irish teams heading to this adventure race in Portugal. Only wish I was heading there myself!!!

According to experienced Irish international adventure racer Paul Mahon the race is somewhat different “with compulsory and optional control points throughout the course and a set finish time for all teams of 100 hours so until the end you are not really sure how you are doing but it favours teams with more stamina I reckon as some teams will go out and blast it and then (hopefully) fade in the last day of the race”.

Hopefully indeed. :-)

According to the organisers:

The 2008 edition of the Estoril Portugal XPD Race will qualify the winning three teams for the World Championships which will also take place in Portugal (ARWC 2009).
The magnificent Estoril Coast will once more welcome the best international adventure racing teams, allowing them to explore the vast potentialities of the municipalities of Cascais and Sintra and its magnificent Natural Park. It will be an opportunity to see the best national teams competing at the highest level in Adventure Racing, demonstrating their skills and their knowledge and experience of national territory.

Paul’s team mates include Brian Keogh, Ollie O’ Rean and Scottish female Lizzie Rose. Best of luck to all involved in this event which runs from 30th November till 4th December and covers 500 - 600km!!
