DUBLIN, IRELAND (Team Geared Up) I’ve been won over by the power of positive thinking! I posted before about the Beast of the East Triathlon (my first venture into the mad world of tri!) but I only vaguely mentioned that I had had a very hard time on the swim. It had gone so badly for me and since I hadn’t huge problems swimming in a pool I kinda thought I needed help. I spoke on the phone for 5 minutes to a sports psychologist and he fixed me…..well almost!! ;-)
With the help of visulaisation techniques and some mental trickery I seem to be much better able to cope with the open water. So on the eve of my second ever triathlon I’m posting here about my progress and that in itself is a posititve sign because up until now I’ve been too scared to post about my ironman too much because of fear of failure. I’m looking forward tomorrow to the Caroline Kearney Memorial Triathlon and intend going into it full of the sense of adventure I normally reserve for long distance mountain runs and ultras, especially since this tri is in honour of such a hero.
Big thanks to “coach bloke” Peter Kern and “bike bloke” Rob Cummins for getting me this far! And best of luck to all those taking part!

I’ve also started keeping a blog about my Ironman experience over at Wheelworx. Image is from the Beast flickr set.

Good work! Did you only start running 5 years ago? (I spotted that on wheelworx)
Yeah Robin and mountain running 4 years ago. :-)
(I only stopped smoking 7 years ago….Allen Carr rules!)
wow!! Can’t believe that!
You are my hero… Can’t wait to hear how it goes.
hey,
great stuff, keep it up, sounds to be going well
- did my first duathlon the other day in the phoenix park - think I’m hooked now!
Inspirational stuff! Keep up the good work.
I’m not surprised that the psychologist is making a big difference. Ultimately its all in the ceann really, isn’t it.
We had a our first session with ours last week and it was hugely positive. Covered lots of stuff on teamwork, and goal setting and downtime. Fascinating stuff.

Great to see that you’re feeling confident. Keep the blogs coming.
Hey Richard I heard that duathlon was the most eciting of the series of 3! I must do a post even though I missed it, i did the other 2.
John you’ve done everythign else, it’s about time you gave Tri a go….
Ferg that sounds brilliant. Thanks for the encouragement.
You’re a legend Ais! 3 years in triathlon and I’ve not done an IM! Best of luck in the final weeks & taper!
Dying to hear how CK tri went!
Duathlon Wednesday was good - tough as longer than normal (2 laps run, 5 laps bike, 1 lap run) but great race!
We’ll see you next years for the 2009 series!
just seeing results now Ais!
Brilliant! Well done!
34 mins is very respectable for a swim. Told ya they were not all as hard as BOTE! And a 40 min 10k! 3rd fastest lady of the day!
No stoppin ya now for IM UK! :)
jeez can’t believe its only 4 weeks away. Well done on the triathlon Ais - looks like all that hardcore training is paying off.
Hi Aisling,
Apologies, I meant to drop you a line a while ago to thank you for mentioning Stonemad and Roth. My sincerest apologies if Stonemad had anything to do with you getting involved with this Ironman business. Glad you enjoyed it all the same.
Good Luck with IMUK next week. I am sure Peter has you well prepared. Give yourself lots of room at the start, soak up the atmosphere, relax and the swim will be grand. The rest I suspect you will find “relatively easy”. Might see you over there. It seemed like a good idea to sign up for this last year, but as I haven’t been able to do much since returning from Germany I am probably more nervous about this race than you.
Best of luck and sorry again.
Alan Ryan
Cheers Alan, I’m so chuffed with that. Training has gone brilliantly and I’m really looking forward to it now. It has been an incredible experience and nothing like it has ever got into my head as much. I don’t really want it to end!
Thanks so much, hopefully see you there and good luck with it!
Aisling
