CHICAGO, UNITED STATES (Team Geared Up) - This photo came down the wire from watershed news.
“The photo of the Bottleneck was taken just after the Serbian fell,” Nicholas Rice, 23, of Hermosa Beach, said in an e-mail early Wednesday from K2 base camp.
The Bottleneck photo shows a line of climbers ascending the couloir at 11:06 a.m. Friday Aug. 1, according to electronic data attached to the file. Click on it for detail.
Amazing to see the detail. You can see the face they (presumably) went out on and fell from on the left.

Robin,
Don’t speculate too much about which way they went. I have no confirmation when the photo linked below was taken. But the route indicated is consistent with other descriptions from those who have been there. Once out of the couloir, there is apparently a traverse above the serac. No reason to get on the face you refer to.

Another brief update, with link to a summit video:
http://watershednews.blogspot.com/2008/08/killer-mountains.html
that so called steep climb looks so easy!, okay
if ice breaks off youre prolly gone but that can happen everywhere, like a lottery…
Barocci, the perspective doesn’t show how steep the face they are on is. They go up diagonally to the left of where they are but the face they are on is more than 60 degrees of ice/snow. It is far from easy, couple that with being at 8000m of altitude where in each breath you only get 1/3 of the oxygen you get at sea level… go figure.

This vid gives a fairly good view of the Bottleneck area - I think it’s Unterkircher’s 2004 summit vid.
