BBC Documentary: From the Bann to Beijing

Written by aislingc

DUBLIN, IRELAND (Team Geared Up) Watch out for this documentary on Wednesday night at 10:45pm on BBC 1 Northern Ireland about 3 Northern Ireland oarsmen, all from the one town, on their quest to get to Beijing.

For the past 18 months, BBC Sport Northern Ireland’s Season Ticket has been following the progress of oarsmen Alan Campbell, Richard Chambers and Richard Archibald - all from Coleraine and all former students at Coleraine Inst, on a journey that has taken them from Bann to Beijing.

With unrivalled access and candid personal diary footage, the documentary charts the incredible struggle to qualify for the
Olympics.Alan competes in the single scull event for Great Britain, the two Richards race against each other in the Lightweight four, Richard Chambers for Great Britain and Richard Archibald for Ireland.

It is pretty fantastic to have 3 Olympians from the same town heading to the same event! Pretty special……

Another hat-trick for rowers from Kerry with Paul Griffin, Sean Casey and Cathal Moynihan all from Killarney rowing clubs.
Paul and Cathal are racing in the same boat, the lightweight men’s 4- and Sean is in the heavyweight men’s 4-!
It emphasizes the importance of the development of a wide variety of sports in communities not to mention the dedication of the clubs behind these guys!

Cheers Fiola, Valerie O’ Sullivan sent us a photo of the three of them. I will do a post over the weekend. That’s a great coup for Killarney!
