Wicklow Way Relay 2008 |

DUBLIN, IRELAND (Team Geared Up) It was always going to be very close. Every year Rathfarnham Athletic Club win the Wicklow Way relay but usually by a short margin of only a few minutes. So this year Gerry Brady had put together a superteam of Clonliffe and guests in the hope of posing a serious challenge. I think for the first 6 legs Rathfarnham led the way with a 6 minute gap until Niall Coppinger took over in leg 7 and not only caught them but gave Clonliffe and guests about a 6 minute lead. Dessie Shorten ran the last leg to bring them home as winners.

Niall in full flight on leg 7.
Our own gilry team had a cracking day and despite our first runner going slightly astray on leg 1 (even though we had ran it the day before!!) we still managed to come home 11th out of 37 teams, even setting two new women’s records for legs 2 and 5. As is the case every year, the sun was beating down and a smashing after-race gathering was guaranteed in the finish town of Shillelagh.

Our all female Clonliffe team with driver and invaluable support for the day Gary Moralee.

The image of Niall is Gerry Brady’s, the other two are mine! That first one is me and TGU’s Neal feeling silly in our his and her t-shirts!
