Runing at The New York Times |
CHICAGO, USA ( Team Geared Up) – The New York Times is always a great source of information on all kind of topics. And running is not an exception. For this week’s post I thought I would bring back some of the articles from the on-line version of the newspaper that I have read over this first half of the year and were mentioned at trailrunningsoul.com
- Jennifer Garofalini, the director of land protection at the Mohonk Preserve in the Hudson Valley in New York State, tested five blister remedies and NYT has the article about it. The products tested were two that prevent blisters and three that cure them: Sam Blist-o-Ban, Glaciergel Blister and Burn Dressings, Spenco 2nd Skin, Bobyglide Anti-chafing Protectant Stick and Profoot Slik Stik.
- A good reading about the relationship between suffering and endurance sports. There seems to be a kind of secret pleasure in enduring pain that makes athletes come back for more of this insane suffering. Maybe it’s on (everyone’s) DNA or maybe it’s just the outlet we need from the monotonous everyday life. In any case, I totally see it. The article is from a NYT blogger who is training to ride one of the 21 stages in this year’s Tour de France.
- An excellent article from Gina Kolata on consumption of carbohydrates and proteins during and after long workouts. Quoting different researchers and studies she goes through what is known about proteins, carbohydrates and performance and how all these recovery products may likely be completely expendable.
- Better run outside: a short article talking about studies that have shown that people burn about 5 percent more calories when running outside versus running on a treadmill (free subscription required).
- People like to cheat, and marathons are no exception. An article on how people are selling on eBay their entries for marathons that have tough qualifying times, like the Boston Marathon.
- A visual look at a new generation of running hats: Adidas, Sugoi, Boss, Pearl Izumi and Brooks
- A good sneak peak on snowshoeing (including and audio slide show) will put you up to speed on this sport if you never heard of it.

They’re great Ed. I’ve been reading through them with interest!!! I don’t think we’ll ever get to the root of the suffering/ endurance event question. I know in that article Lance Armstrong says the winners are those that are willing to suffer the most but I would totally disagree. Interesting stuff though……
I disagree too. Many times winners are not good sufferers but just great athletes. But I understand what Armstrong means when he talks about suffering. I kind of find an odd pleasure when I suffer physical pain when competing. May it’s the felling that you’re giving everything you’ve got to win the race and you’re pushing your limits… or maybe it’s just plain craziness :)
