Gear Reviews Week |

CHICAGO, USA (Team Geared Up) - This week is about getting geared up!
A short review of the CW-X Pro Tights. These tights have an improved support system throughout your joints and major muscle groups, and also support your lower back and hips, which results in a muscle vibration reduction and therefore a fatigue decrease.
After getting his hands on one of the Garmin Forerunner 405, this runner/biker writes some interesting posts about his new GPS/HRM watch:
- His first impressions, after using it on his first race of the season
- A video showing the size differences between the Garmin, the Polar S625X, RS800 and Suunto T6
- Pointing some issues when using it to measure calories on a 18.5 mile bike
After it was announced a few days ago Hydrapak’s Gel Bot won Health Magazine’s 2008 Fitness Award, I googled a bit to see what buyers were saying of this innovative bottle that holds water and sports gel in one container. This is some of the stuff that I found:
- In October 2006, Steven Regenold tested this product and concluded “the Gel-Bot is solidly built and worth its $16 price tag in spades“
- On the other side of review spectrum, a blogger’s opinion after being sent a bottle for reviewing
- Gel-Bot got 4.5 stars out of 5 at reviews site buzzillions.com
- From a biker’s perspective: “Ever since I received the GelBot demo bottle, I have used it on every ride, and I have no intention of giving it back“
The Skull Candy Link Hydro Pack is a hydration pack tested by Daved Brosche for several weeks in Costa Rica that has a particularity: its built-in speaker system that can handle iPods, mp3 players and even cell phones with a set of controls incorporated into the straps to adjust volume, skip songs, etc.. Three of the bloggers at Outdoorzy.com tested the New Balance 920, an outdoor shoe specially designed for water sports, and they all put together their experience into a single post.
Designed with a low profile and a sticky rubber sole, the Inov 8 Roclite 285 is a trail and adventure shoe useful, as per the post author, for 5k to 50km trail races or 6 to 8 hours adventure racing. Read how they performed here
The new Garmin Colorado 300 is an outdoors specific hand-held GPS receiver that comes with a built-in worldwide basemap and some new features like the 3D topo maps or an SD card slot. This device’s review at outdoorsmagic.com.
And this week’s video is a short clip from Kami Semick on how to tie a heel lock for long-distance running
Thanks for reading!

Hey Ed, I was very interested in the 405 review. I tried on one the other day and it’s WAY too big for my girly wrists. I do have a Garmi 50 (non GPS) but I’ve been wanting a Garmin GPS watch of my own every since I bought a 305 for my husband. When I heard they were basing the 405 on how the 50 looks I was hopeful, but it’s still too big. I’ll have to wait for the girly version. I do love the 50 though!
Ah, good to know. I bet my wrists are nearly the same size as yours (yep, girly wrists too ;) so that’s something I’ll have to keep in mind as getting a gps watch has been on my mind for quite some time. Other than the size, any other major drawbacks? How does it responds when running in the woods? Does it looses signal easily?
Went to look at the 405 in the Garmin megashop yesterday after reading about it here.

Not as big as it looks in the video. US$399 I think I saw on it. Still big.
I have the 101 - now that’s BIG!

Caroline trains with the 305 most days - got use to the bulky size and thinks nothing of it anymore - really useful for interval or fartlec runs - or just for keeping a record of miles ran per week especially if it’s over multi terrain when the pace changes alot
New one looks sweet though
Regarding the New Balance 920s… they are awesome shoes. We are in the middle of a big review extravaganza on “The Shoes of Summer”…. sandals, flops, water shoes, breathable trail runners, etc… This is probably the best shoe we’ve tested yet. We all agreed, guys gals… westerners, east coasters, and that aint easy for us to do my friends!
