Lizzy Hawker to speak in 53 Degrees North

Written by aislingc

DUBLIN, IRELAND (Team Geared Up) This could be a very long post if I was to list all of mountaineer and ultra-runner Lizzy Hawker’s achievements. If you google her name you get tonnes of recording breaking runs and wins and the list goes on and on….. Last year she set a new World Record on Everest Base Camp-to-Kathmandu Ultra-Run, she was first woman home in the North Face Ultra Trail Tour du Mont Blanc in 2005 (in 26 hours! incredible compared to my 43 hours a year later!!), she was the women’s World 100k Champion in 2006. She also ran the Jungfrau marathon last year when I did it. She seems to enjoy the mountain marathons:
In her own words:

Zermatt was special for me. I first went to Zermatt at the age of six, and its 4000’ers were the first big mountains I saw. At the age of 22 the Matterhorn was my first taste of alpine mountaineering, and the snatched moment on its summit was the first of many very special moments to come. So to return to Zermatt to run, it was like running home. And I just ran. I was never aware of where the next woman behind me was, or the margin that I had, in that respect you never let up since a race is never over until the end!

We’ll have a chance to hear her speak in a couple of weeks as she’s giving a talk in outdoor shop 53 Degrees North in Carrickmines Dublin. It’s set for Thursday June 12th at 8pm. Tickets €5.
