DUBLIN, IRELAND (Team Geared Up) I know Eoin K said there was no jealousy in Irish ultrarunning well he’s wrong! Friend of TGU John O’ Regan and Corkman Roy Galvin are heading to one of the most extreme marathons in the world and I, for one, am dead jealous!!! On May 29th they’ll take part in the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu Marathon. According to Richard Donovan:
The Inca Trail Marathon is much more than a race. It’s a nine-day trip into history, a rich cultural experience, and a holiday in a mind-boggling beautiful paradise.
A holiday?!!
John O’Regan, winner of the 2005 Yukon Arctic Ultra 100-Miles and veteran of the 2004 North Pole Marathon explained it like this:
The race starts high in the Peruvian Andes at an altitude of 2500M and follows the Inca Trail over an undulating course including 3 high passes all of which are at an altitude of over 4000M and eventually finishes in the Inca Capital of Machu Picchu at an altitude of 2400M. To put this into perspective it would be like running a Marathon and climbing / descending Carrantouhill 3 times starting from sea level. The weather during the event will add to the challenge and temperatures during the race can range from below freezing at the start (04:30am) to 30 C towards the finish with possible rain and sleet.
Right I’m going back to the ultras, with this marathon lark I get to see Rotterdam while those around me go to China, South America etc. etc……. :-(

OK, so there is a little bit of jealousy :)
Sounds like a cracking race alright. So many things to try, not enough time to do them all…..
Good luck to the lads.
Hey guys I hope it goes well for you. You will really enjoy the landscape around you. John make sure you strap that knee because some of the downhill bits are going to be tough (not to mention the uphill relief).
I am getting a goo for events like that and reading Ashling’s post above I have to say I whole heartedly agree.
Best of luck. Is it a sponsorship thing that the Garmin is sticking out of the jacket John???
I like the watch window in the jacket :-) what’ll they think of next??!
Having walked that section of the Inca trail, my guess is the downhill will be extremely tough as the path is made of lots & lots of very slippy small flat stones.
