DUBLIN, IRELAND (Team geared Up) Super Ultrarunner and Record Holder Tony Mangan was onto TGU to let us know of a cracking achievement byThomas Maguire. Thomas had a fantastic win in the Namibian 120km Ultramarathon, where he absolutely decimated the field!!
From Multidays:
Press Release from Julie Thomas:
The Namibia 24 hour Ultra Race has just finished and we are delighted to announce the winners:
1. Thomas Maguire, 17 hours, 15 minutes - who is already a record holder of the North Pole Marathon (2007) so now adds one of the hottest marathons to his list of achievements!
2. Andrew McMenemy, 21 hours, 40 minutes
3. Joakim (Rolf) Jonsson, 22 hours, 24 minutes - who has never run a marathon before!
From the sounds of it the conditions were incredible:
The 120km route traversed gravel plains framed by distant ridges and mountains, running past dramatic upheavals of granite inselbergs. All participants remained self sufficient over the 24 hour period, carrying all their own food and equipment - although water was provided at every checkpoint (every 20/21km). Eight runners completed the race.
Congrats to Thomas, for a small country we seem to be churning out some super ultra heroes. We’ve reported on Thomas before at the North Pole marathon and his Irish record breaking performances, to name just a couple of his terrific achievements!

wow, that’s astonishing! Like you said, great to hear they’re all coming out of Ireland :)
Now, how do we go about getting these guys proper support (see article on canoer….)……
Did this make the national papers?
Go on ya good thing. F*eckin legend - men like this need more recognition…
Well done T. I am lucky to know Thomas well… he is a modest fella and as Neal says above he really does need some ‘proper’ support. Its about time someone stepped in and offered some form of support that would enable him to train properly. At the minute Thomas is juggling work with training commitments - how will he ever reach his full potential if he cant fully focus on his running? At present he has no dedicated sponsor that will enable him to commit to his running - he has received apparel.kit sponsorship form Montane, Fuelbelt and Thorlos - thats it. He’s is good now but how good could he be if given the opportunity? Visit the website http://www.xtnw.com to read more about T and for regular updates on his exploits…
the issue with all minority sports Peter! No idea how to get around it other than keep plugging away.
I do promise that if I ever win the lotto that a load of the money will go into a fund to support climbers/canoers/extreme runners/etc. :)
That’s not much use now, so I’m at a loss how to get government entities to start supporting everything bar GAA, soccer, etc…..
Hope yo uwin the lottery then Neal!
Between that and the 25 metre high climbing wall I want to build in Dublin, I don’t think I’ll be giving up my job if I ever do win it :)
Anyone know . Heard he’d a couple of Euro lying around ;)

well done Tom - cracking run!
Sorry to raise the tone, but since we’re talking about sports funding the following link is apt.
If it isn’t bad enough that all of the funding seems to go to “established” sports like GAA and Soccer what about the fact that horse and greyhound racing get more funding than all of them put together!!!
