DUBLIN, IRELAND (Team Geared Up) Planet Ultramarathon brings us this story about the Irish 24 hour running champion Dara O’ Kearney:

Dara O’Kearney has made a good start to the year by beating a high quality field in the European Deep Stack Championship held in Drogheda over the weekend.
A deal was done when five players were left and Dara, with a dominating chip stack, took the lion’s share of the prize money and the trophy. Congratulations Dara!
1st Dara O’Kearney €47,200
2nd Gary Clarke €34,100
3rd Fran Egan €28,600
4th Lloyd O’Farrell €26,700
5th Barry Hand €23,400

You’d have to run a lot of ultras to earn that kinda cash! Dara was third in last years Connemara Ultra.

I’ve heard that ultra-endurance running is indeed often like a game of poker. It seems that must indeed be the case. Well done that man! (Someone tell me the guy who was fifth is using his stage name?!)

Thanks Aisling and Rick. I recognise Aisling’s name from her own ultra exploits.

For anyone interested in my view on the link between poker and ultra running, I talked about it in my Saturday Sport interview on RTE:

PS: That’s Baz’s real name, as far as I know :)

Dara you should send us a better photo for the blogpost about your next adventure. Let us know what you’re at!
