Irish Mountain Running Winter League Race 2: Three Rock

DUBLIN, IRELAND (Team Geared Up) The race isn’t the hard bit, it’s getting out of bed that’s the killer. On an extremely wet and freezing cold Sunday morning I could think of better places to be but there I was stood on the line for the second race in the Irish Mountain Running Association’s Winter League. Jeez it was savage weather and we knew from the off it wasn’t gonna get any warmer or drier as we headed upwards. Truth is, it was so enjoyable. I like running uphill. It involves very little risk and no loss of control. I also like the rain. Hailstones I could have lived without. But seriosuly it felt kinda great being battered by wind and hail and knee deep in puddles and mud and a wind so strong and powerful that where my next step landed was anybodys guess.

It was a new route and involved various loops at the top of Three Rock, Two Rock and Fairy Castle (highest point in the Dublin mountains). The tricky nature of the downhill meant I lost a few places to faster descenders but I really enjoyed the climbing. This was a scary event for many of the mountain running first-timers who showed up. The strength of the wind and severity of the conditions meant that newbies were a bit shaken and I think it may have put a couple of people off. If you were there let us know what you thought….. Results here. Next up is Trooperstown in 2 weeks.

Love that wind battered feeling.

Ah yes, fun and games! I have finally just gotten the last bit of muck out of my fingernails and just about gotten my breath back!

Indeed for any newbies to IMRA if you survive yesterday’s race - well done, you’ve passed the test as it doesn’t get any harder than that!

Oh yes, and in case u need to ask (but you prob don’t!) Aisling won folks! ;)
Well done Ais!

Sounds crazy!
I was up in northern Connemara getting pounded on a run myself. Wet and wild so I can only imagine what it was like on Three Rock also.

Nice going as always Aisling, and nice going also Jackie - looks like you’d a good race yourself!

Ah shucks, u say the nicest things Neal! ;)

LOL :) A top 10 finish is pretty good going if you ask me!

By the way all, since it’s a gorgeous day and as one of my climber buddies puts it. It’s twisted Irish humour about the weather.

“What do you call the gorgeous day that arrives after two days of rain?”
….
….

“Monday”

lol @ neal

:)
@ Robin, today is the perfect example of it here in Ireland!

That’s so true Neal, it rains all weekend and today is sunshine and t-shirt weather!! Ah yes, it doesn’t bother us folk who work from home ;-)

Well done Jackie! You’re smiling in some of John Shiels photos, obviously enjoying yourself!
