Irish Runner Tony Mangan Victorious Again! |

DUBLIN IRELAND, (Team Geared Up) I’m reading an article in the current issue of my local free newspaper, the Southside People, about super ultra athlete Tony Mangan’s latest victory. He cruised to victory in the 72 hour Across the Years ultra in Arizona, winning by a whopping 23 miles. He ran 274 miles around a 500 metre track! Wow, imagine the mental stamina needed for that never mind the physical!
Taking to the front from the start of the race with steady, controlled running, Tony was able to build up a big unassailable lead through the short sunny days and long freezing cold nights.
The Southside people tells us his next challenge will be the defence of his 48 hour world record indoor title in Brno, Czech Republic in March.
Athletics Ireland have it covered here.

Wow. At the end, he mentions Dara O’Kearney who wrote this account of what these races are like:

“With about 90 minutes to go in the race, the ankle just seemed to go completely. Running was no longer possible, but a fast limp could still be managed. I knew I was near enough to the 200K mark that I could get there if I kept moving. So on I limped, dragging the busted ankle behind me, idly wondering if it was broken, sprained, or just busted in some other way. Tony tried to encourage me to start running again but I told him with finality that my ankle had gone.”
I had the pleasure of wheeling Dara back through the airports on the way home. ’twas a bit surreal having the newly crowned Irish 24 hour running champion in a wheelchair. Great sympathy from almost everyone, except for the Aer Lingus Air Hostess who (probably correctly) reckoned he was a fuppin eejit for doing that to himself :)
As for Tony… the man is a running machine… unreal. Amazing to see a man at the absolute top of his game at 50 years old. Gives us all hope!
Is that Mark McLoughlin from Cork?
great scott, tony clearly dresses to the left!!! aisling, have pity on us - you never heard of image cropping?!!!
that took me a while to get…. but when I did I think the noise I made woke the apartment next door.
