Irish Guinness World Record for 7-7-7 |
UPDATE: We’ve emailed and waited for Mark to respond but heard nothing and so we’ll leave this with Richard Donovan’s (Race Director of the Antarctic Ice Marathon) update and who sent us a copy of Tim Harris’s Guinness World Record certificate showing Tim holds the youngest (and fastest) 7-7-7 as a 23-year-old on 28 January 2007. Tim Harris holds the record.
UPDATE: Mark does hold the Guinness World Record for ‘Youngest person to complete a marathon on all seven continents (male)’. The last update was incorrect.
UPDATE: Richard Donovan Race Director of the Antarctic Ice Marathon says that Tim Harris holds the youngest (and fastest) 7-7-7. Thanks Richard.

SINGAPORE - Mark sure kept himself quiet! RTE has just broken the story that Mark Scanlon has achieved the Guinness World Record for Youngest 7-7-7.
A 24-year-old Irish man has broken the Guinness World Record for the youngest person to run seven marathons in seven months on seven continents.
Mark Scanlon, who arrived in Dublin Airport today after his record-breaking runs, had no formal training when he took on the 7-7-7 challenge, raising €20,000 for the Irish Cancer Society.
Mr Scanlon said he is looking forward to returning home to Ballina, Co Mayo for a well-earned rest.

Congratulations Mark.

I read about this guy in either the Sunday Tribune or Irish Times a few months ago, he was ringing up frozen food companies to ask if he could train in their freezers in preparation for the antartic marathon!!

Great to hear he managed to complete his challenge
This guy is magic.
I saw him running on a threadmill in Grafton Street a few weeks ago so that people would donate to the Irish Cancer Society while he was training!
Ireland should be very proud of this young man.
what a brilliant story!! the man is a legend!!
I wonder if he’s going out with anyone?
does anyone know if he’s free?
Angie
fair play,
The man is, indeed, a legend.
I couldn’t walk for a week after the Cork marathon last year.
Same again for seven months, no thanks.
Despite the ongoing news reports in Ireland, Mark Scanlon (24) is not the youngest person to run marathons on all the continents. Tim Harris from Great Britain, at 23 years of age, ran marathons on all the continents within three months, finishing in early 2007. Tim’s profile is contained on the website of the Antarctic Ice Marathon, which he completed in 2006. See http://www.icemarathon.com/live/167.html. It’s unfortunate, for whatever reason, that this story about Mark Scanlon has been pushed around the media in Ireland. It’s unfair and disrespectful to Tim Harris. However, for a truly amazing feat by an Irish runner, check out http://www.iau.org.tw/news_detail.php?Id=299: Tony Mangan ran the equivalent of 10 marathons in two days last year for an official world record.

Interesting Richard. Thanks for setting us right.
We covered Tony here http://blog.teamgearedup.com/2008/01/irish-runner-tony-mangan-victorious-again.html amazing :-)
Hi Richard! I met a mate of yours on Saturday, John O’ Regan. I’m planning a blogpost on it later!
hi
Your update is absolutely incorrect. I can email a copy of Tim Harris’s Guinness World Record certificate confirming he completed the task as a 23-year-old on 28 January 2007. On what basis did you somehow decide that the information I supplied was incorrect? It’s a pity you didn’t contact me first.
Richard Donovan
Hi Richard…. I’ve emailed the source for confirmation of the same evidence.
Real apologies if incorrect (again!).
Hi Robin, no problem. It’s obviously not the most important of records, but for the sake of accuracy I’ve emailed a copy of the Guinness World Record cert held by Tim Harris. It confirms that he was 23 years 339 days old when he completed a marathon on all seven continents on 28 January 2007. It acknowledges him as “the youngest man to complete a marathon on all seven continents”. Unless Mark Scanlon has an age reveral mechanism, he couldn’t be the youngest person to do so when 24 years old one year later. FYI, a 21 year-old called Raj Patel recently completed a marathon on all seven continents and he is gathering his paperwork for Guinness now. Cheers, Richard.
Just to add to this debate a little Richard, I do believe that Raj Patel was 22 years old when he finished doing all 7 continents, when he finished in Australasia.
Is this not correct?
I don’t know if Raj was 22 years old when he finished, but I can find out his exact age (years and days). I will post it here.
Cheers, Richard.
Hi Nicholas, it looks like Raj Patel was 22 years and 40 days when he finished the Canberra Marathon on his final continent. It’s obviously irrelevant to the preceding discussion - but just information that somebody younger than Tim has also now run marathons on seven continents.
Richard.
