Ultrarunning: Western States 100 |

DUBLIN, IRELAND (Team Geared Up) The 2008 lottery draw took place over the weekend for the Western States Endurance Run, the 100 mile long ultrarun that takes place in California every June. The reason it’s a lottery is because they get almost 1200 entrants looking to fill only 357 places and 166 of those are “automatics” so that’s only about 190 places left! The lucky applicants are here, but I don’t see any Irish names listed. Also looks like blogger Eric didn’t get a place either.
WS100 is an historical run and is one of the four 100 mile races that comprise the Grand Slam of Ultrarunning: Vermont 100 Mile Endurance Run, the Wasatch Front 100 Mile Endurance Run in Utah, and the Leadville Trail 100 in Colorado.
Check out this previous post from Eoin with a video of last year’s winner. I might make one of these a goal for 2010?

I would go TWO hundred miles in a single day for the chance to sport one of those belt-buckles over a few Budweisers on a Saturday night!!
If you’re gonna play the juke-box, would ya kindly keep it country?!
lol - it is a god awful buckle.
Robin,
That god awful buckle is hand made and more tempting than a drunk prom queen on homecoming night!
If I only run one more 100 mile race this is the one I want to finish so I can take one of these buckles home with me. I’ll settle for the brass version given for finishers that go over 24 hours. The cutoff for receiving a buckle is 30 hours.
Last year I was lucky enough to have been selected in the lottery. I bonked big time at mile 50 and had to drop with the hardest part of the course completed and just 8 miles from my pacer. Now I need to get the WS100 Monkey off my back.
This race is really a 100 mile buffet with excellent food at the aid stations and so many volunteers that you always have your own personal helper to assist you with your needs.
Temps are commonly 100+ degrees F however that was not a factor last year with 85-90 degrees F average in the canyons. The mountains in Northern California are beautiful if not dry and dusty this time of year. Altitude can be a problem but you don’t get much over 8200 feet which is about 2500 Meters. You do climb 18,000 vertical feet which is about 5490 Meters.
My ancestors went over to Iceland from Ireland back in the days of King Olaf. Heck, perhaps I’m related to some of the endurance athletes in your area. Good blood lines!
I’ve enjoyed keeping tabs on your events at this site. Keep up the good work! We have a saying at our run club that the best runners are the ones with the biggest smile.
Keep Smiling!

That buckle is cool. If you can imagine Steve McQueen wearing it, it’s cool! ;-)
Hi Eric. I love keeping track of your ventures. You get to run the most amazing trails. And just like me you have a great bunch of running buddies (and a partner who’s just as crazy about the sport)!!
Beats this any day:
