Irish Coast Guard: Sikorsky S61N Helicopter Profile

Written by admin

LONDON, UK (Team Geared Up) - The Bray Air Display was on in Dublin, Ireland this weekend. A couple of photos of the Sikorsky S61N helicopter Rescue 116 that participated in the display have appeared on Flickr.

Bray 062

Rescue 116 is the helicopter based in Dublin Airport that provides the air service to Dublin/Wicklow Mountain Rescue team. This helicopter has a huge rotor-span of 19m. It operates with a crew of 4 - pilot, co-pilot, winch operator & winch-man. The main cabin has seating for approx 17 passengers that can be air-lifted off mountain or ship.

Bonus Question: Can anyone tell me (in the comments below) where the number 61 in S61N comes from?

61 means nothing except that it comes after 60. Sikorsky just assigned model numbers (more or less) sequentially:

The 61 refers to the birth year of the model. The S92 which is replacing the S61 in the UK was announced in 1992 but not built until 1995. The N refers to nautical model.
I think the chopper in Bray was the Waterford(117) based one Robin? I stand to be corrected on all of above.

Diverman - you are probably right about 177. I was only speculating. Just really liked the top photo of the reflection in the helmet a lot!

And yes bingo - 1961 = S61N (or so MES pilot told me that day in Donabate!)

Apologies, ‘Romeo Charlie Golf’ is working out of Dublin as Rescue 116 at the moment. Usually it’s ‘Mike Echo Sierra’. Used it today on an incident.

Hello, The call sign rescue 116 means it is on a rescue Mission .At all other times it will be called Mike Echo Sierra. Which means it is on exercise. Sligo s Hellicopter is called Charlie Xray Sierra Or Rescue 118 when it has been called out for an Emergency. Hope this is a help.

Cheers Alan!Yyou are correct on the day it would have been MES on the day, not 116 - but as Diverman says, it was 117 on on the day… is that GCE? http://blog.teamgearedup.com/2007/04/new-s61-rescue-helicopter-on-route-to-ireland.html

I wasn’t aware of the name for 118 CXS, where do the initials come from?

MES- Marine Emergency Services
GCE - Garda Costa nEireann

You could go to a model Shop and get an AIRFIX model Off an RAF Seaking/Sikorsky type helicopter. It is also available as a kit with a RNLI Severn Lifeboat included. It was brought out by the RNLI two yrs ago. Contact http://www.rnli.org.uk if you have trouble getting it. It might not be exactly the same but is very close.

Presuming you’re in Dublin you could try Marks Models on Hawkins street. http://www.marksmodels.com/ Reckon they could order you a S61 if they didn’t have it in stock. They have a shop in Cork too.
