Workout of the Day - Crossfit

DUBLIN, IRELAND (Team Geared Up) Reading Irish blogger Fatmammycat this morning, she tells us that she’s a huge fan of Crossfit.

I love crossfit, (crossfit.com)I love it with the fervour I normally reserve for rum. Everyday I log on to their website and read what torture is lined up for that day and I marvel at the devious and dastardedly mind behind it. After Tuesday’s agonising and arse numbing 400m lunge walk I still cannot sit into my chair without yelping or muttering in fear.

This is a website which posts a daily workout involving “principle strength and conditioning programme” that will make you as fit as a special operations unit, champion martial arts or elite and professional athlete. Rather than specializing in one area of fitness they claim to be broad, general and inclusive.

Todays Workout of the Day is quite simple: run 5k. Yesterdays went like this:

With a continuously running clock do one muscle-up the first minute, two muscle-ups the second minute, three muscle-ups the third minute… continuing as long as you are able.

I like the idea of a simple daily task, something that could be done easily and quickly and if it changes every day you’re not gonna get bored (although I run every day and never get bored!) They even had a rest day on Monday!

TGU,

Is there potential here for training.teamgearedup.com with a similar idea? But for finger-boards/mountain-running et. al.?

I know people would be at different levels, but maybe a scale? I could build something that spat out a daily work regime that you present per month/week in advance.

Great idea! Especially if it covered multi-sports like climbing, cycling etc. Even just a “Go Try It” Day or something. Like the “Tackle it Tuesday” Idea http://www.5minutesformom.com/category/blogging/meme/tackle-it-tuesday/

(It’s from the “Mommy” blogs I read!) :-) I’m not all about the runnin’ ya know…..

LOL

Ok - great. I’m taking this conversation to the improvements section of the boards:

Let’s do this!

oh god, not crossfit! You’ve obviously been lucky with what their daily training programs are! My body is curling up into a little ball in terror at this from previous experience ;)
I’ve used this before - awesome for all-rounder training and improvements. The only bad part I found with it was that the daily update is put out at American time so you’re always a day behind what the main one is. Makes sense once you try it.

Still though, yes it’s savage, and if you want an idea of the strength gains, have a look at the videos on their site….

one-arm jumps up a rope anybody?

Crossfit certainly works, I’ve lost over 2 stone in just 8 months doing Crossfit, and am stronger, fitter and faster than I was at 18 (some 17 years ago), so basically, since ever!

Don’t be put off by the Work out of the Day as posted on the main Crossfit.com site, it’s deliberately set hard for the eliteto struggle. A fundamental tenet of Crossfit is that form and function remains the same for everyone, only load / weight / reps are scaled to fit. There are videos of 70 year olds doing Crossfit WODs.

The BrandX site does a daily scaled version of the WOD, and there will be a scaled routine there for everyone:

http://www.brandxmartialarts.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=16

E.g. the subs for the Muscle up WOD mentioned above were:

- if you can’t do Muscle ups (I can’t) then do jumping muscle ups.
- if you can’t do jumping muscle ups, then do seated muscle ups.
- if you can’t do seated muscle ups, then do squat muscle ups.
- if you don’t have the kit to do muscle ups (gymnastic rings) then do seated pull ups and bench dips.

If you’ve got any questions, pop over to my blog (click my name) and ask there. Or even better, if you’re anywhere near Manchester, come visit Englands only full time Crossfit Gym at http://www.CrossfitManchester.com

Thanks for that Colin. Will pop over to your blog and have a look!

You’re welcome. I’ve just noticed from your blog that you’re in Dublin. Lucky you, “Crossfit Ireland” has just opened in Dublin, literally last month! I met the guys running it when they came over to Manchester a couple of months back: http://www.crossfit.ie/
