Warriors Run, Co. Sligo, Ireland

Written by aislingc

DUBLIN, IRELAND (Team Geared Up) Here’s another one for next year! The 10 mile Warriors Run is one of Ireland’s toughest competitive races held each year as part of the Warriors Festival in Co. Sligo. And you just missed it!

Each year runners from all over Ireland (and various parts of the world) converge on Strandhill to follow in the footsteps of her ancient warriors. The Warriors Run takes competitors from the Cannon Gun at the beachfront in Strandhill to the top of Knocknarea, around Queen Maeves Cairn and back to the beachfront again.

They call it “multi-terrain” and it sounds quite gruelling. Seven miles are on paved roads with 3 “special” miles in the middle. These three miles include a 700 foot climb on loose gravel, unsurfaced and grass paths. Here’s the results from this year’s race, held last Sunday, with Shaun Whelan winning in 59 minutes. Congrats to fellow IMRA runner Turlough Conway who secured 4th in a time of 1:02 and I see a Richard Oakley in 14th! Congrats!

Hey Aisling,

thanks for the congrats. this race is a total blast and I would highly recommend it. the organisation this year was excellent and the course, as always, was demanding, but very interesting and scenic. hats off to Turlough. I had him in my sights for the first mile or so, but the next time I saw him he was heading down the mountain as I was going up.
I was hoping to use it as a warm-up race for the cross country season, but then I went and broke my ankle coming down from a successful climb of the Inaccessible Pinnacle in the Cuilinn mountains in Skye. Just stood onto a platform of rock and a big chunk gave way, sending me on a big fall with 4 or 5 differenct contacts with the rock. broke the nose along with the ankle.
Had to crawl down the mountain while a friend ran on ahead to raise the alarm. Accident happened at 3.30pm. Was rescued at 7.30pm trying to limp my way back and made it to the waiting ambulance by 10pm after a bit of an epic day. Big thanks due to Skye Mountain Rescue and their stretcher team. 4 more weeks in the cast and then weeks of recovering to look forward to. Still it could be worse. was lucky I was wearing helmet.

really enjoying the blog,

Richard

Sounds like an “epic” day alright!? A broken nose and ankle can’t be easy to recover from. Really hope you’re back on form soon. Keep us posted about what you’re up to!
