Irish Running: Ultra Trail Tour du Mont Blanc

Written by aislingc

DUBLIN, IRELAND (Team Geared Up) With the Aer Lingus strike averted, this afternoon a number of Irish runners are heading over to Chamonix for the running of the North Face Ultra Trail Tour du Mont Blanc. It’s 163k through 3 countries run continuously over about 2 days through the Alps. Included in the starting line up for the full event (there is a shorter 86k version) is Tony and Gary of the Wicklow Round success.

I’ll be getting text message alerts throughout the weekend letting me know how Tony is doing so I may update you then! This service is available here if you wish to track any of the runners. I know how hard this event is as I did it last year with Tony (and gave a very long account of it here! You’ve been warned!)

I was helping a guy in the shop the other day who was looking for a mac to use at the race!? Told me that the jacket hadn’t really worked too well last year and needed something heavier to throw over everything. Said he had done it last year as well. Probably know him?

Scott Jurek to win?

If he did it last year and finished it was probably Eoin Phelan. Young guy? Fairish hair? Jackets were a problem for all of us last year. We had done our training in great weather and brought very light jackets which were NOT suitable for the Alps! We all bought goretex jackets in Chamonix the day after the event! :-)
Tony considered buying a big plastic poncho to try this time around for heavy rain. He didn’t but, who knows? You just don’t know what Alpine weather is gonna do?
Haven’t a clue who will win? The bloke from last year looked incredible in the DVD!

Tony reached La Charme at 20:45, Saint Gervais at 21:38, Les Contamines at 23:35. So he appears to be moving along nicely. The deadline for Les Contamines was 00:45 so he’s inside it.
I think it’ll be a long weekend of nail biting for me…..

Tony reached Refuge Elisabetta at 7:53am (local time) so he’s about 1 hour 40 inside the cut offs. I’d say he’s very happy with that! He’s moving through all the checkpoints at an even pace. At this rate he may reach the first big stop in Cormayeur, Italy between 11:30 and 12. I’ll be updating our running blog http://ultrarunners.wordpress.com/ with news as I get the SMS messages but runners can be tracked on line here: http://live.ultratrailmb.com/coureurentete.php

So how long do they run in between stationed stops?

Found his stats, cool!

I spoke to him this morning and he was finding it very hot. Gary had to pull out because of the heat after about 5 hours. Some of the other Irish are doing great. Adrian Tucker went through La Fouly at 6pm (cut off there is 11:12 tonight) so he’s ploughing along.

Tony just went through Grand Col Ferret (98k) at 19:05. The stationed stops are sometimes towns, sometimes refuges, sometimes North Face tents positioned in remote spots. The distance varies. http://live.ultratrailmb.com/pointsMenu.php

Marco Olmo (last years winner) has won the UTMB in a time of 21 hours 38 minutes. It’s a slightly longer course this year with an extra climb and apparently the heat has been incredible.

Adrian Tucker finished this morning at 9:31 local time in 668th position. That’s 38 hours 57 minutes! Big Congrats! Tony’s still going, reaching Trient this morning at 7:10. I’m thinking he may finish sometime about 3pm?

I didn’t actually realise how tough this race was!

What was your previous time?

It was 43 and a half hours for me and Tony last year. Tony finished today in 43 hours and 50 minutes so better than last year cos it was 5k longer this year (a long way in the Alps!) and had an extra climb! He’s chuffed! :-)

God it’s unbelieveably tough!

40h:56m for me to complete the tour. It was the toughest 100 I’ve done, 8 hours longer than Wasatch last year. Bravo to anyone that complted this monster.
