Sleuth: How To Date Google Maps Satellite Photo |

LONDON, UK (Team Geared Up) - Following an email trail of a local coast guard unit, we were looking at Google Maps satellite view of the call-out area to see if there was any access to areas we didn’t know about visible from the air. Passages through gardens, along cliff edges, right-of-way’s and what was wide enough to get the quad through.
Part of this process was to date the photo to attain how old the footage was. How’s this for detective work!…
- It’s between November & April because the harbour moorings are empty.
- There’s a fair amount of yellow gorse out which means it’s after Jan (but still before April because of boats).
- There’s nobody parked in Techecrete, so it’s a Saturday or Sunday.
- I reckon taken at about 11am by the church tower shadow.
- It’s not a Sunday @ 11am as there’s no cars at church so it’s a Saturday.
- So it’s 11am on a Saturday….. That must mean, there’s a 2 in 4 chances the team are on the cliffs training (Scroll to Bailey) yup - there they are van & jeep parked unloading cliff gear!
- So we now know it’s a Saturday we were training in Jan-March, which are Jan 20th, Feb 10th, March Sat 3rd or Sat 24th.
- now correlate that with the Tide Tables find the day the tide was just before low water at northwall (clontarf basin empty) and ooh Feb 10th it was 1.6m at 10am.
- Bingo - Google Maps Sat Image of Howth was taken on… February 10th 2007 at ~1130am.

“Robin if you want to be a real nerd you can use a sundial calculator on
the shadow of the church.
Its off about 5 degrees so using this website that puts it at just
before 11:30am
