LONDON, UK (Team Geared Up) - Remember this story we did in January Extreme Mountain Biking Cliffs Of Moher, we had the photos but no clue who did it or if they were photoshopped. In March we uncovered a video to prove it wasn’t fake, and found out it was Hans Rey in the footage.

Well now we’ve found out how they did it, the secret was found in a small Irish newspaper article. Not only is it speculated they are wearing parachutes on their backs, but also had helmets with gyroscopes in them (that hold their heads upright) to prevent them going off the edge sideways with veritgo. Clever boys!

It’s a good story anyway! Discuss!

An update from myself on this one. I didn’t realise this article was still doing the rounds back home!
MTB UK magazine interviewed him recently.
Hans Rey is one of THE legends of the MTB. As MTB UK put it, he’s the guy “who invented the idea of getting paid for doing crazy and dangerous stunts.”

anyway, check out his official homepage for a full write up on his trip: http://www.hansrey.com/

The mission for the 6-day holiday in Ireland was to visit 30 pubs in 6 days and to ride the Cliffs of Moher, which he describes as a “small narrow ledge that was between 6 feet to 6 inches wide and looked like a long curvy balcony without a handrail.”

In short, nothing fancy, he’s just a bit crazy and very, very good!

Here’s the video of his trip (taken from his site):

I don’t see what the problem is. These guy’s are pro’s, they are just as stable on a bike as we’d be on our feet. There used to be no problem with people going down to the area of the cliff shown in the photo’s….just a sign saying that you do so at you’re own risk. I remember standing just where they are on some fairly windy days….no need for a gyroscope or parachute though.

Although I was at the cliffs last weekend and it’s become far too clinical, you’re not allowed anywhere near the edge anymore… :( and parking is €8…ouch!

I must admit, when I saw the Gyro bit my mind did go back to “Giro” and I had to wonder if the media had misunderstood the term!!!!

I still think it would be extremely difficult as a trials bike pro to cycle that ledge due to the veritgo effect, scroll down on http://blog.teamgearedup.com/2007/01/extreme-mountain-biking-cliffs-of-moher.html

Interesting. When was this article in the Irish mirror? The exact same one was in the Evening Herald months ago shortly after it made the news

Possibly months ago :-) I found the scan online.
