Top Gear: Polar Special |

LONDON, UK (Team Geared Up) - The Top Gear Polar Special aired tonight on BBC2. It was brilliant - having been trained up by Ranulph Fiennes, Jeremy Clarkson & James May set off to drive to the North Pole in a race against Richard Hammond who set off with the traditional Sledge Dogs.
The closing credits gave me a good chuckle when they scrolled past:
Presented by: Sir Ranulph Clarkson, Sir Ranulph May & Sir Ranulph Hammond.

Am I right in thinking they went to the magnetic pole? Hence the fact there was nobody else there and also it was only 78deg north. Great programme, must have taken a large background set-up to be able to complete it. Looks like the hamster had a vehicle backup as well. I wonder did the two teams do it together but they made it look as if it was done separately. Would have made sense safetywise.
Ahh - When they said “We’re the most northerly people in the world” I was thinking, except for the 30 scientists in the NP Research Station! Magnetic - that’s it.
Hammond must of had a backup (at least transport for the film crew), but I’m thinking it was probably another sledge as that’s standard. Clarkson driving there in a vehicle with rubber tyres is actually quite a good achievement. Normally vehicles have tank tracks for polar travel. I’m guessing they could have set a good speed record, but no clue.
The shots of the red jeep bashing through the snow were astounding!
Best episode ever… I was glued to the seat… sipping… gin & tonic
Guys! next day everyone at work was talking about you, superb!
keep up the enterteinment…. Great Show!
Apparewntly it was the position of the 1996 Magnetic North Pole (it drifts!).
The biennial Polar Race takes place between Resolute Bay northern Canada and the 1996-certified location of the North Magnetic Pole at 78°35.7′N, 104°11.9′W.
The estimated 2005 Magnetic North Pole is at 82.7° N 114.4° W
So it was 729 miles from THE North Pole and 300 plus miles from the current Magnetic North Pole.
wonderful top gear programme on the polar expedition could you please tell me can you buy the toyota pickup in the same guise as the ones used by the expedition or where they specially prepared for the expedition thank you
Those pick-ups are toyota hi-lux 3.0HDI’s. They’re fairly bulletproof even without the mods done on them. I think they were prepared in Iceland. Iceland has a long history of preparing 4×4s for ice and snow conditions. You can’t buy them off the shelf prepared like they are on the show. The tyres and suspension may not be suitable for road use anyway. Talk to Toyota, they’ll give you the bad news on the cost of the mods.
