Road to Everest Base Camp |
DUBLIN, IRELAND(Geared Up Blog) - I know this sounds far fetched but work has began on a highway to Everest Base Camp. The Chinese government are carrying out the work with the Olympic torch in mind. And with nearly 500 people summiting this year i wonder will the number increase even more with this new access. Maybe we’ll see people acclimatising in these pressure chambers, that simulate the affects of altitude on the body, and then driving down the road where they park their car for a few days while the go up everest?
The new road will begin at the base of the mountain in China’s Tibet region and replace a rough 108-kilometre (67-mile) track that leads to base camp, the Xinhua news agency reported.
Construction of the 150-million-yuan (20-million-dollar) highway began on Monday and will take about four months to complete, according to Xinhua. The road is being built to “ease the path of those bearing the Olympic torch,” Xinhua said.
