Beast of Ballyhoura Adventure Challenge |
DUBLIN, IRELAND (Team Geared Up) Details have just been announced of the Beast of Ballyhoura Adventure Race (we mentioned it previously here). Organisers are billing it as:
the only non-stop overnight race here in Ireland this year in the ancient and magical Ballyhoura region. Prepare to meet your demons - both real and imagined.
To register your team you would need to get over there very quickly as the organisers expect to fill the 20 places for the long event pretty soon. It is being held on the August Bank Holiday and is also part of the 3rd annual Inter-Services Challenge, where teams from the various disciplines compete with the civilians. Last time I spoke with Moire from Team Irish AR Ballyfree I think she said she was going to give this a go so best of luck!
I love their cute green logo by the way, SO adorable and of course credit for the images goes to their website where I did my usual pilfering! ;-)

Aisling , surely you are going to be giving it a go yourself?
Thanks for the mention by the way, its a fabulous course and there will be lots of options for teams of all abilities to finish the course in the Mystery castle on sunday morning!!!
Hi Ness, well done to you and your team on a great performance in Scotland! How are your injuries? What’s next for you?
I’d love to give it a go but there’s just so much going on this summer! (And a small matter of someone to mind the kids if it’s an overnighter?) ;-) I’ll get working on it!
Well done to Paul, Ro, Eoin and Will who stormed the beast to win it in style over the weekend. Gagsie’s team was 2nd and the Northern Irish Lads of Ivan, Paul McA, Rowan and our own Melaine came 3rd.
Excellent course altogether starting with orienteering 8 mandatory controls and 12 optionals followed by hike over the Galtees, mad abseil down waterfall, bike section over to Ballyhoura and great single track, and the maddest kayak section ever where you spent more time out of the boat than in, ducking and diving weirs, branches and logs. Weirdest moment was definitely clay pigeon shooting at 1 am florescent orange clays in a floodlit area of Ballyhoura Mountains. The trophies were great too… sculpted beast heads courtesy of a local guy who specialises in the like.
A definite ‘bring it on’ for next year!
Moire thanks for that. I’m just getting back to all the news. I had a prediction from Paul beforehand on how it would go so I must compare it to the actual result! Were you racing yourself?
Yeah, was racing alright… we came in 4th overall. Looking at Irish AR Denny’s times (the results are now up together with a video of the event) they really did storm that course, especially the trek section! They’ll be competing the Gaelforce 12 in Westport so I’m sure we’ll get to witness their winning ways again at the end of August!
