Twelve Bens and Carrantouhil

Written by aislingc

DUBLIN, IRELAND (Team Geared Up) Busy weekend on the mountain running scene. A team of Clonliffe Harriers girls are heading west to the Twelve Bens Challenge. This is a walk or run of 28km with a total ascent of 2530m starting at the Inagh Valley in Connemara.

This is an extremely tough, strenuous challenge and should only be attempted by experienced hill-walkers. It requires that you are a competent navigator (or you are with someone who is a competent navigator – if the weather is bad you’re on your own – the walk organizers will populate the checkpoints only, they do not provide guides on the challenge). All participants, regardless of whether part of a group, should have their own map and compass.

Best of luck this Sunday to Bronagh Ni Bhriain, Karen Duggan, Fionnuala Doherty and Krissy Gormley who are all experienced mountain runners/ adventure racers and also great fun to have on an adventure so they’re gonna enjoy every minute of this tough challenge!

And the biggie in Irish mountain running; Carrantouhil, is being held also on Sunday. I have always wanted to run this one, by all accounts it’s really tough (bound to be I suppose!?). Eoghan McKenna won last year in a time of 80 minutes and Beth McCluskey was first female in 100 minutes.
Maybe next year I’ll get round to it. If you’re heading that way good luck and take care!
