A new series of posts will feature great reviews of tents taken from my FindMeATent.com site.
This is the best single person Mountaineering tent period. The craftsmanship is remarkable and the customer service is great. I’m 6′ at 205# and was very comfortable.
A very good 4 season shelter! It is very strong and able to withstand strong winds. It is very warm and has enough space for all your kit and a big vestibule to cook in should the need arise. Pitching the tent is very fast as inner and outer go up together. There is the possibility to double pole the tent easily - I have tried this and it works well though I doubt I will ever bother to carry the extra pole as the tent is strong enough for UK mountains in winter. The tent can easily be pitched outer only, so can serve as an emergency shelter to leave at the bottom of your rucksack, this option will apeal to minimalists! The groundsheet is pretty tough so no need for a footprint unless camping on rocky ground. The attention to detail on the outer tent is excellent however there are a few parts of the inner on my tent that looked a little rough - stitching etc. I may try to get the following modifications done to improve the tent for typical uk conditions. IMHO there are not enough ventilation options. The inner tent zips could easily have two sliders fitted so that the top of the inner mesh could be left partially open to increase ventilation. The ends of the inner tent could do with mesh panels, preferably zip or velcro open/close to improve ventilation as often condensation is present on my sleeping bag at both ends of the tent. There is only one small pocket on the inner tent, not enough in my opinion. The pole tensioner can twist the webbing and jam, not a major problem but a bit of a pain. The zip pullers are metal and can ‘gingle’ - I prefer string pullers and I may cut the metal tags off mine and swap them for string.
- Excellent wind stability - I have no problems with the amount of space for a solo tent. I am 180cm. A taller person may have problems although this tent should probably be long enough for anyone up to 200cm. - I have sat out poor weather for 24 hours in this tent and opening up the inner created a comfortable and roomy shelter inside the outer tent. -Probably the lightest tent in it class. Lighter solo tents are available but they will be 3-season tents or single walled tents. Stephenson make lighter weight four season solo tents, but they are single walled. -This tent does have some condensation, but I have never had it get bad enough to drip, even on wet nights camped near rivers. The condensation does not present a problem for me but may for some. - Pitching takes a couple of practice runs, but is very easy after a few goes. Careful site selection is required as the tent requires that at least four guylines be anchored. With a little creativity for guyline anchor points this does not present a problem. Overall, absolutely worth the money for solo travel in all seasons. Even if you never head out solo, the light weight of this tent means you can have your own room at the end of the day!!
