Our Wicklow Round Attempt

Written by aislingc

DUBLIN, IRELAND (Team Geared Up) As I said in the comments we had to stop the round attempt at Glenmacnass waterfall, about 18 hours in. I was absolutely distraught as I was feeling very fresh, had changed into warm dry clothes for the night ahead and felt that the worst was behind us. We were down to only two willing to continue, myself and Tony and the feeling was that with mist, nightfall and rain all ahead of us that the mountains were just too dangerous for two people; if anything happened to one then the other would be in big trouble on their own.

Myself and Tony actually considered spending a night in the forest and waiting for daybreak to continue but that would have been foolish and we could not have asked support teams to be there again the next day.

I still haven’t accepted the decision and moved on (tears are still flowing), but the reaction from others supporting our attempt has been great, really touching. Our support team were absolutley indredible. They did everything for us at the breaks and were full of encouragment. They did so much above and beyond the call of duty; huge thanks to Bronagh and Grainne and their brother and all those who came out to support us at various points. It was so encouraging and really lifted our spirits! Thanks Robin and Eoin for the blogposts!

I’m not gonna say too much about the actual attempt up to that point as I want Tony to write his account and I will link to it, if that’s ok. Keep you in suspense a while longer……

That’s crazy! We were on the N6 to Galway in some serious rainfall and were thinking of you on a summit!

Also crazy that Glenmacnass was where me & Eoin pulled out after 21hrs of the ‘56′.

Did our feet beat yours? http://www.flickr.com/photos/r1g2b3/35971421/in/set-784444/

Hi Robin.
No my feet were fine, not a bother, I find Salomons great even if the lace did break!
I had no issues with my legs either I really wanted to continue. There was only two of us, myself and Tony willing to continue. WIt was thought to be just too dangerous to travel in two’s in that weather with limited visibility on open mountain so we couldn’t go on.
I’m gutted, I didn’t want to stop and it’s not a decision I’ve come to terms with just yet.
Gutted……

Also Tony’s posted a “few words” here…

I’m keen to give this a whirl now.

Great report by Tony on the imra site. I volunterred to Joe to be a marshall at the top of Prince William’s Seat! It doesnt sound like it would have been a very pleasant wait in the rain and cold.

It would have been great to meet you there Eoin, but you would have been waiting a long time! The good thing about Prince William’s Seat is that there is a “yellow brick road” all the way up and down, not like other mountains which are wildernesses!
