BBC Report: Robot heading for Antarctic dive |
DUBLIN (Geared Up Blog) - Aside from my eagerness to get over to Asia to help do some volunteer work (that or Dog Sledding in Norway, I really do want to get to Antarctica. I would give close to anything to get offered a 6 month stint in their labs down there doing anything either field tech or comms management.
Because of this - all stories involving the continent raise interest for me. BBC news report today that a new robot will uncover the mysteries of the Antarctic depths by probing with a new vessel capable of plunging 6.5km (four miles) down.
Isis, the UK’s first deep-diving remotely operated vehicle (ROV), will be combing the sea-bed in the region in its inaugural science mission.
Researchers hope to uncover more about the effects of glaciers on the ocean floor, and also find out about the animals that inhabit these waters.
The mission begins in mid-January and will last for about three weeks.
