Glendalough Boulders Donated to UK |
I got this news before it gets published tomorrow, by then it’ll be too late. Received this from a secret contact within the Irish climbing community involved in the transportation. The boulders are being moved tomorrow, and brought by truck to Dublin Port.
Duchas, the Irish Parks Board, have donated two large boulders from Glendalough (the Glen of the Two Lakes), Co. Wicklow to the Ratho climbing centre in Edinburgh. The boulders, nicknamed Big Jim and Big Jane by local climbers, are to be transported to the Ratho Adventure Centre. The plan is to give British climbers exposure to the ‘quality rock’ to be found though out the east coast of Ireland. With a number of established ‘problems’ already existing on the boulders they will make a welcome addition to Ratho’s bouldering area. Alan O’Byrne of the Irish Parks Board had this to say: ‘While outdoor pursuits are, of course, free in the Wicklow National Park we are hoping to increase revenues through tourism and our recently introduced pay for parking initiative in the upper Glendalough car park.’ Irish boulderers are said to be staging a protest.
Please get down to the picket line tomorrow and stop the crane from accessing the miners villiage.

Wow, its been a while since I wrote that :)
The previous year I wrote a story about Ratho buying Dalkey Quarry and turning it into an indoor sports climbing area. A suprising number of people fell for it.
