Patagonia Interesting Sales Technique

Written by admin

Not many people know this but we’ve a Patagonia Outlet in town (Dublin, Ireland). And those who are not outdoor ‘oriented’ may not know that Patagonia are one of the most respected outdoor brands in the world. Their equipment is so expensive that when you go to France generally the ‘elite’ have it, and in Chamonix for example the store would be considered the BT2 of Dublin. In other words, we’re lucky as anything to have it here and ALL at half price.

I picked up the jacket above yesterday (my Sprayway outlet one from 2000 is long past it’s prime!) and I got at half price at 179.00! Which may seem expensive to the untrained eye, but believe me it’s not. I walk up to the counter, as normal, and hand the jacket over… to my suprise the guy was more interested in making sure that it was a perfect fit on me with full range of movement than actually making the sale. Furthering this having swiped my credit card he proceeded to spend 5 minutes with me going through every little feature on it, explaining exactly how to adjust it and how to wash it, dry it, care for it, and pack it. I was pleasantly suprised yet felt a bit awkward!

It’s an interesting sales technique to get return customers when your staff show complete love for the products they are selling. That or the guy who was foreign was demonstrating what sales staff are like in every other country, aposed to many Irish outdoor retailers on minimum wage and power-trips.

The gene that expresses the retail protein has never been switched on with me but when I walked into Patagonia’s store today on Exchequer street, it came on!
I have an Lowe Alpine jacket but needed a new one and went into Patagonia for the ‘laugh’, as the prices are usually too rich for me. I found most items at 30% off and the rest marked as ’seconds’. If their were flaws I couldn’t find them. All were marked as ‘outlet prices’, I bought a Goretex jacket which retails at 399euro for 120euro! Fleeces that retail for 150 plus were between 30 and 45euro.
I’d hurry, the places was packed with yanks. The secret’s out!

Sinead. Sounds exactly like Patagonia to me!

Don’t worry, stock won’t run out.. it’s constantly replenished with the seconds from the factory. As long as they keep getting seems not perfect, we’ll get cheap gear!

Agree. Service in the Patagonia store in Dublin is great. Even though providing you with a load of useful hints might be a good sales strategy, I think the Patagonia guys mean it - they love their products and they are all true outdoor men themselves!

PS: I don’t work for Patagonia (yet ;o), but I really love their stuff !!!
