Christmas Time, Suicide and Wine. |
It’s been a busy weekend for emergency services, fires, accidental shootings and as I write this, news on the radio reports that there is a large scale helicopter search in the North Wicklow Mountains after a pensioner in a nursing home has gone missing and headed out into the hills.
I spent Christmas Eve on Saturday night on Howth West Pier, having been called out to attend to an incident where a person had driven themselves over the pier late in the evening. Very sad affair indeed… with our flood lights off the pier the ILB did a great job of locating the vehicle and the Garda Water Unit divers recovered the body before a crane removed the car. It’s a common story on Christmas Eve, and the large scale turn out of emergency services voluntary or otherwise should be commended.
Thoughts go out to the family & friends at this sad time.

I knew the girl that drove off the pier that night. Her name was elaine maguire and she was only 32 with 3 young children. She had been suffering with depression for some time and god love her thought this was her only way out. I awoke Christmas day to a text on my phone telling me the news and I and my friends spent the day in shock. Her funeral was a sad affair and my heart went out to her children. I suffer from depression myself and think this was a brave thing for her to do, i couldn’t do it. Though there are times i think i could. It would be an easy way out for me, but not for my family left behind.
