Beat this Falvey!
Gavin Bate has this morning reached the summit of Mount Everest. His Alpine style assault on the summit straight from Camp 2 has placed him on the summit without the use of supplemental oxygen. Gavin had to face down very windy conditions and he lost his glasses after camp 2, so it was a massive effort from the Belfast climber. His attempts to stand precisely on the summit were thwarted by the queue of climbers waiting to do the same. Cold conditions made the wait too dangerous.
It’s a storming day for Irish mountaineering as Gavin Bates reached the summit. Once I have more photos and further details I’ll post them here. Good choice in turning around at the Hillary Step too Gavin. That cold in the wait is the killer… Better to come back in one piece and hope the eyesight returns after your brief bought of Keritinitis (sp?) Snow Blindness!
